Or maybe Ubik was the first novel I read by Philip K. Dick. Layered reality, sentient machines, psychic powers, religious exploration, and salvation in an aerosol can: sad, funny, surreal and painfully real all at the same time. Having read it twice, I can see why people like John Lennon and Terry Gilliam have been intrigued by it. The screenplay version by Dick himself is out there as well.
